Doubling & Even/Odd Strategies with Eureka Math | Second Grade


Hello there!

We've been officially back to school for about 3 weeks now from our winter break and somehow I can't believe we're halfway through the school year. Starting fresh at a brand new school has been both exhilarating and exhausting all at the same time - so apologies for not having the time to get on here and blog as often as I would like.

However, I have been busy with the ever popular modules for Eureka Math. I am so thrilled that so many teachers have loved my other modules and have been begging for more. They can be quite cumbersome to dig through, but I'm happy to announce yet another module is now L-I-V-E over at my TpT shop!

Application Sets & Concept Development

What makes this resource so beneficial to my fellow teachers is the simplicity of the student work pages. My number one complaint about the original workbooks from Eureka Math were there were too many practice problems and the concept development lessons needed more scaffolding. So, inspired by the needs of my classroom and knowing I wanted to incorporate Eureka Math more effectively, I created my own versions of the modules.

Since then, I've been able to supplement my lessons with these student practice pages complete with application problems and visuals to the concept development lessons included in the teacher manual.

Solving Strategies with Eureka Math


Today I am so excited to finally share Module 4 of my Eureka Math set of resources! It's taken months to finally pull together and I personally am thankful to all of my friends and followers here for their patience!

These last few months have been keeping me busy: our family moved to San Diego, I've been on multi-step interviews for a new teaching position (which I got, yay!), prepping my lettering shop for the holidays, and life in general just seemed to have gotten in the way. However, I'm happy to say that as we're on the heels of a Winter Break and gearing up to travel to Texas to visit with my husband's family for the holidays, here's Module 4 for second grade!

Application Problems & Problem Sets

As always, Module 4 is packed full of 31 engaging lessons that have students learn new strategies for solving multi-step problems, word problems, and begin composing and decomposing multi-digit number expressions. Students are really introduced in this module to building upon their understanding of addition and subtraction rules while learning new strategies like the vertical way and using place value charts to visualize their bundling and unbundling.

This is a fun module and always one where you'll find your students really relying on what they know and have learned in the previous three modules!

So, let's take a peek at Module 4!

Student work spaces

Something new to the application pages are the empty work spaces for students to use while following the lesson prompts from the teacher. After the mid-module assessment, the lessons require quite a bit of practice and work and I thought the best way to have kids follow along is by having a work space for them to work in while the teacher models how to solve each concept development problem.

Each lesson has a coordinating Application Problem, Concept Development, and Problem Set. In my opinion, Eureka Math's version can be overwhelming with words, little to no visuals, and only have teachers model the skill, which often lead to boring lessons that were predictable and had very little engagement with my students.

Now, with each module I create I incorporate the concept taught in each lesson but do so with more of a chance for students to visualize the skill, work through a little note-taking while the teacher instructs during the Concept Development, and a Problem Sets that focus on up to an average of 3-4 practice problems for students to complete either together or independently.

I've found that using Eureka Math is a great foundation, but to be used as an launching place for more engaging activities like centers, small groups, or group work. So, I've designed my resources with this in mind and hope teachers can find unique ways to include these modules into their lessons.

Skill Practice

Each lesson has an aligned Application Problem, a little section for skill introduction (for use during the Concept Development lesson), and a Problem Set. The Application Problem is identical to the word problem given at the beginning of each lesson and gives students a space to work through the RDW process.

Depending on the skill, the notes section introduces the skill or vocabulary that students will be learning and practicing in that lesson. It incorporates the processes talked about in the lesson for the Concept Development in a way that students can easily follow along and provide a visual to what the teacher will be discussing.

Personally, I've always been more successful when math concepts are broken down into easy steps and match with what the teacher is saying. My hope is that this way of designing the lesson sheets are helpful to other teachers as well as their students!

Assessments!

This module comes with both a mid-module and end-of-module assessment! Much like the other worksheets provided in the original Eureka Math workbook, their assessments require too much of demonstrating understanding how to solve multiples of the same problem. I've decided to cut down the assessments to two pages and include the problems that are covered specific skills. That way these assessments are used in more of an informal way for teachers to check-in with their students throughout the module - and use more comprehensive assessments later on.


Sprints!

And just like all of my other modules I've included the given sprints! These pages are optional considering Eureka Math has their own workbook just for Sprints and may be easier than printing these - but I wanted to include them anyways! :)

Number Sense with Eureka Math


Module 3 is finally finished and I am so excited to share it with all of you! Even though this process of going through each lesson is very time consuming, I'm happy to have the chance to look it over before teaching it in the coming year. For the last few weeks I've dug in and this module is all about number sense, using base tens, and place value to count and solve various word problems.

Again, this module ties into a unit that incorporates interactive notebooks where students can safely keep their work. I love using these notebooks because it cuts down on paper waste and students can easily flip back to previous lessons as an aide or reference.

Let's take a peek at what module 3 looks like for second grade!

Interactive Notebook Templates

This resource ties in with the same formatting as Module 1 and 2 for second grade. You can easily print these as stand alone worksheet pages or inserts for an interactive notebook. 

Application Problems & Problem Sets

The main inspiration behind me adapting this curriculum has been due to the lengthy and busy-work driven application problems and problem sets. The provided worksheets by Eureka Math aren't conducive to work in real classrooms because there are a million problem set questions and the lessons require a lot of whole group teaching.

I've found that students can quickly lose their focus during these lessons because every time the set up is the same. Personal white boards, the teacher standing at the front of the class, and problem sets that seemingly go on forever!

So, I decided to skim through each lesson and include problems that keeps kids focused on the skill and that will easily lead into other activities such as centers. 


Application Problems:
These single questions review key skills students have been working on from the previous lessons. It's like a little brain boost that prepares students for the thinking they'll be doing in the current lesson.

I've included scaffolding for these problems with visuals and other aides that focus student's attention to building various math skills. On the same sheet as the application problems are either reflections or an intro to the skill that they will be learning during the whole group teaching portion of the lesson. Having this section is great because it's a quick snapshot for the kids and aligns with the vocabulary or focus that's provided in Eureka's lesson plan.

Problem Sets:
Problem sets are the individual or partner work time during the lesson. After the whole group lesson or activity students complete their practice problems and come back for a whole group debrief. This is where I've really cut down on what Eureka provides in terms of their approach to independent practice.

Use in conjunction with centers or guided math groups!
My intent is that these focused practice problems will lead into a greater activity or center work. It can also be used during guided math where the teacher can meet with students who need a little extra help. I love the idea of these practice problems being transitional for students to continue practicing the skill, but in the form of games!

Sprints!

I've made sure to include sides A and B of the sprints for each lesson. The answer keys can be found online or in the Teacher Handbook provided by Eureka. I didn't change the problems, but just made them cuter! :)

Sprints are typically done at the beginning of a lesson before the whole group instruction, based on the format from Eureka. I personally love using them permitting student need or just as a check-in on their fluency.

Assessments!

It wouldn't be a math unit if there weren't formal assessments! This module has a mid-module and end of module assessment where students are tested on their understanding of the skills taught this unit. I also included a teacher answer key because I added a few problems to the end of module test since the original didn't cover everything the kids worked on (such as bundling and unbundling and using strategies such as the empty number line).

Diving Into Eureka Math | First Grade

Last year was the first time I was introduced to Eureka Math. My school had adopted it last year and it seems the consensus was that overall teachers liked aspects of the curriculum, but that it definitely can be modified. I just so happen to agree and today I wanted to share a few of my ideas as I plan to teach Module 1 for first grade next school year.

As some of you may already know, Eureka Math seems to be a popular math curriculum that is finding it's way from middle/high schools to the elementary grades. In second grade last year I got to get a glimpse into the program and how the kids interact with it's material. I have to agree that there is A LOT of great strategies taught, but I found too much time was spent on any one given concept. And I have to say it...

...I HATE the worksheets that come along with it!

They've got too many problems and the format isn't conducive to helping students visualize the math concepts being taught. Also...it's not cute so I took it upon myself to create something that, I hope, teachers all over can use.

I am excited to share with you the complete MODULE 1 of Eureka Math for first grade!

My plan for the future is to dig into second grade for when I go back next January and have those resources available to you all! So, definitely keep an eye out for that!

But, for now I have Module 1 ready for all my first grade teacher friends and I couldn't be more excited to share this with you!

So, let's take a peek at what I've been working on these last few weeks of summer...


One way I love teaching is by using easy-to-follow note pages for my students. By having them be responsible for taking 'notes' during a lesson, I'm more likely to keep their attention and engagement for longer. So, I formatted each application problem and problem set for every lesson to be just right for pasting into student's interactive notebooks!

**But want worksheets instead for centers or small groups? Just print them like normal!

Have students easily follow along with your lessons each day! I've adapted these pages so that while you're teaching the concept development, they can follow along in their journals. I've also narrowed down the problem sets to include just the right amount of practice problems before dismissing your students to another activity you may have planned.

Using a notebook helps keep track of student learning, gives students a space to jot their ideas and work down, and keeps them in a safe place all year long! Use additional pages in your notebooks, too, for other activities you plan during each lesson.

Each Module will feature a cover page with tabs so that as students build their journals throughout the year, each Module will be easy to find! Cover pages also include an overview of what students will be learning about during those lessons.


Most lessons include extension activities for those students ready to expand their thinking or even for those early finishers. Along with that are templates that can be printed out and laminated for continued use throughout the school year using Expo markers! Cut and paste activities can also be used throughout various lessons.



Every so many lessons the Eureka Math curriculum gives students the opportunity to complete Sprints, or timed fluency tests. These sprints can be used at the beginning of lessons to get student's brains warmed up or use them as a means to check-in with their fluency. A and B sides are included as well and match up to Eureka's answer keys included in the Teacher Handbook. Answer keys can also be found online!
